Pray for Baby Gavin

This is an email from my friend, Dan. Please pray for Baby Gavin and his parents, Dan & Brandilee. You can link to their blog from mine. (See the side bar.)

Gavin Daniel Schafran was born AUGUST 4th at 10:22 am, weighing
in at 7lbs-11oz. and measuring 20 inches. BrandiLee did wonderful,
delivering with no pain medication at all. However, after the
delivery did not exactly go the way we had pictured.

When Gavin was born, he was not breathing, and continued to not
breathe on his own, so the NICU people were called and they whisked
him away from us up to the NICU. At first, they thought that it was
just shock from being delivered and that he'd start breathing on his
own and everything would be fine. They discovered, however, that
there's more wrong with him. His nervous system is undergoing some
sort of irritation, and this morning he had several seizures. The
doctors say that it's not an epileptic type seisure (so he won't have
epilleptic seisures his whole life), but a type of seisure brought on
by the nervous system irritation. They did a spinal tap this morning
to see if its an infection, and if it's not, they think it might be
swelling of the brain (caused by lack of oxygen from him not
breathing). He was taken off the respirator yesterday, and he's
breathing on his own, but he is still under an oxygen hood because his
breathing rate is too high. also, they think there might be some sort
of other infection in his body, but we're still waiting for test
results to show. so far blood cultures have been negative, but
they'll keep watching them for another day or two. bottom line - the
doctors said he'll have to stay in the NICU for at least two weeks and
pretty much all we can do is just wait and watch him - and let his
body (and possibly antibiotics) get him to normal.

So if you could all pray for him, that everything would be ok, and
he'd get healthy soon. Also for BrandiLee and myself - it's been the
most scary, frustrating emotional experience we've ever had. I'll try
to keep you all updated. I attached a picture that i took this
morning (they removed the oxygen hood so i could get a nice shot).

Thanks!!

Dan
